Macy's story

Image

Macy was born unexpectedly early at 33 weeks, marking the beginning of our journey to understand her rare and complex needs. She was later diagnosed with an unbalanced chromosomal translocation. As far as we are aware, no one else has the exact same chromosomal differences as Macy, meaning there is no clear roadmap for her development. This brings both hope and uncertainty - meaning that the sky is the limit, alongside moments of feeling at sea when new challenges arise.

Before joining Playskill, Macy had already been through a great deal. She spent six months in a Spica Cast following pelvic and femoral osteotomies to treat hip dysplasia. This long period with her legs ‘out of action’ significantly affected her physical development and confidence. Macy experienced global developmental delay and needed time, reassurance, and encouragement to believe in her ability to move and eventually walk.

Alongside this, Macy has other health needs, including hearing difficulties and being very small for her age. Despite countless hospital appointments, she has always been a happy, joyful little girl. As her mum, I was determined to do everything possible to help her reach her full potential.

Finding Playskill
Feeling a bit lost in the world of having a child with additional needs, navigating long waiting lists and fragmented support through NHS services, I was lucky to stumble across Playskill online.

Macy joined Playskill in September 2024 at two and a half years old. She is now four.

The Playskill experience
At Playskill, Macy was given the opportunity to work on all of her motor skills, communication and language, and independence. Just as importantly, she was able to spend time learning alongside other children, something she really enjoyed.

When Macy first started, she was stationary and only able to sit. Through gentle, consistent support that followed her pace, she gradually built both strength and confidence. Today, she walks confidently and is even jumping, climbing, and exploring more adventurously. Macy also learned signs at Playskill, which she continues to use at home.

The Playskill team took time to get to know Macy as an individual, encouraging her when she needed it, but always making her feel safe. She especially loved the sensory room, bubbles, and pom-poms.

A different kind of support
While Macy has received physiotherapy, occupational therapy, and speech and language therapy through the NHS, this support has been intermittent and time-limited. Due to her extensive time in hospital, Macy has developed a strong aversion to medical environments and health professionals, which made engaging in NHS sessions difficult.

Playskill was different. Macy was relaxed, happy, and engaged - she didn’t associate it with clinical settings. As a result, she was far more able to make progress and enjoy learning.

Impact on our family
Playskill didn’t just support Macy, it supported me too. Meeting other parents who truly understood life with a child with additional needs was invaluable. Being able to talk openly, share experiences, and celebrate progress - no matter how small it might seem - helped us feel less alone.

Playskill is a true home from home. It offers acceptance, compassion, and high-quality professional knowledge in equal measure. It is a place where children are celebrated for who they are and supported to become the best they can be.

Playskill is a truly amazing charity, and I would recommend it to any family without hesitation.
